Toastmasters is an international organization designed to assist people to improve their communication and leadership skills. The first Toastmasters club was established on October 22, 1924, in Santa Ana, California, by Dr. Ralph C. Smedley, who conceived and developed the idea of helping others to speak more effectively. More clubs were formed, and Toastmasters International was incorporated under California law on December 19, 1932.
At Toastmasters, members learn to speak and lead confidently in a supportive club environment. A typical Toastmasters club is made up of 20 to 30 members. Each club meeting provides an opportunity to strengthen your ability to think on your feet, perfect your presentation and speaking skills, sharpen your listening skills, learn the art of giving and receiving feedback, and perfect and polish your leadership skills. Education is key – as a member you will progress at your own pace through a professional educational program which is broken into two components: Communication, and Leadership. Manuals, which provide a step-by-step approach to the art of speaking and leading confidently, are provided throughout your educational journey. You will not go it alone – you will be assigned an experienced Mentor to support you as you progress through the education program.
DISTRICT 45 is one of 87 of Toastmasters International global districts. Our District is unique as it consists of a combination of American States and Canadian Provinces. Our district encompasses: Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. District 45 is continually growing, at over 100 clubs.
District Director’s Message
It is my honor to serve District 45 as District Director for 2016-2017. This year the District is striving to improve the communication within our District, to engage our members to provide the best possible experience within our clubs, and to continue to provide content at our District events to invigorate our membership. The success of the District in these goals depends on the active participation and leadership of our members from the Club level all the way to the District level. Over the past few year of District leadership service, I have had the pleasure of working with many dedicated members of District 45 as District leaders, on Conference Planning committees, conducting Speech Contests and TLIs, and as club officers. Without the hard work of all of these leaders, we could not conduct the business of Toastmasters and deliver the best possible learning environment for our members. This year we have once again assembled a diverse and talented team of District leaders and I am confident that the District will continue to grow in size and success during the coming year.
The District has an exciting year planned for 2016-17. Steve Chen, Region 9 International Director will be the Keynote Speaker for our Fall Conference on Nov. 4th – 6th at the Algonquin Resort, St. Andrews-by-the-Sea, NB. The Spring Conference on May 19th – 21st will likely include two Past International Presidents and Accredited Speakers as our honored guests. I encourage everyone to save the date for these District events.
Tom Goodwin, DTM
District 45 Director, 2016-2017
